ABOUT AUSSIE JOHN CAR

Priscilla fancies an Aussie John PRISCILLA Presley (who doesn’t even go to the loo on the plane without one of her minders being stationed outside the door), escalated John Laws into the ranks of those so famous they are known by their first name only, last Tuesday night. During the official Sydney launch of her signature scent at Elizabeth Bay House, Presley, 51, revealed to the glamorous throng of thrill-seekers – including hotelier’s wife Jenny Wright, Patricia and Michael Coppleson, Skye McLeod-Leckie and Harry M Miller – that she had been speaking to « John » only that morning. Welcome to visit double din reviews.

From that moment on, Sydney’s highest-paid radio icon appeared to hang on her every word. Meanwhile, settling into Presley’s recently vacated suite at the Park Hyatt today is none other than John Reid, Elton John’s celebrated manager. Reid also looks after Irish dancing sensation, Michael Flatley, who has a big show in Sydney tomorrow. As recently as last Thursday morning, organisers were still desperately seeking a venue for an appropriately glam first night soiree.Hotel observes wild Rose thornsSTAFF at one of Sydney’s most luxurious hotels – the posh Observatory in Kent Street – are still reeling from their close encounter with a particularly difficult guest: Rose Hancock Porteous.

According to one of The Diary’s operatives, disguised as a Chesterfield sofa, the West Australian millionaire and professional « beauty » kicked up a huge stink last Tuesday night when she was shown to her pre-booked room only to discover that it was – shock! horror! – just a room. « I never stay in anything less than a suite, » she informed stunned hotel staff and was only mildly placated when informed that all suites were full but she would be upgraded the next day. Next Hancock Porteous, who is appearing on Foxtel’s Beauty And The Beast, swept into the hotel’s non-smoking restaurant, the Galileo, and proceeded to light up.

THE SWEPT INTO THE HOTEL

Next Hancock Porteous, who is appearing on Foxtel’s Beauty And The Beast, swept into the hotel’s non-smoking restaurant, the Galileo, and proceeded to light up.

We hear that when she was politely asked to stop smoking, all hell broke loose. She declined the offer of an intimate table set up for herself and her husband, Willy, in the hotel’s drawing room. Instead, she commandeered one of the phones in reception and started complaining about the hotel to someone on the other end of the line. In fact, she made such a commotion that a well-known lawyer (who prefers to remain anonymous) asked her to be quiet which, of course, had the opposite effect. Needless to say, she did not stay the night at the Observatory.

Just before she swanned out, however, she asked where the lawyer was seated and offered to let him have it in a very interesting way, if he ever dared say anything to her again. The Diary rang the Observatory’s congenial general manager, Patrick Griffin, to ask about the incident. « No comment, » he politely replied. Meanwhile, just a few streets away, the immensely dignified author, Joan Collins, was dining at a hot new Italian restaurant with an intimate group of friends.
